Treatment for Black Death was based on superstition. Medieval doctors believed that 4 aspects influced a person health. The black bibe, yellow bibe, phlegm and blood. They believed that stench was the main cause so they offered patients sweet-smelling flowers. Herbal medicines were used but often caused poisoning. Other extremes were used such as ‘letting’, which was lancing the buboes to draw out the ‘bad blood’. They also used leaches to suck blood out. Surgery was carried out by barbers and sometimes resulted in amputation.
